Children’s Self-Esteem: A Mediating Link Between Parenting Satisfaction and Children’s Peer Relationships?
Parents undoubtedly play a critical role in the development of children's self-esteem. Specifically, the role of parenting satisfaction as it relates to children's peer interactions was explored. Children's self-esteem was expected to mediate the relationship between parenting satisfaction and children's peer interactions. Greater levels of parenting satisfaction were positively associated with children's level of self-esteem. Children with higher levels of self-esteem were able to remain more engaged with their peers and demonstrate more positive affect. Although self-esteem was not found to be a mediating factor in the relationship between parenting satisfaction and children's peer interactions, the results demonstrated a complex relationship between these three factors. The findings suggest that the degree to which parents are able to derive satisfaction from their parenting is likely to have a significant impact on how children perceive themselves, which subsequently has an impact on the ways in which they relate to their peers. However, the relationship between these three factors is complex and indicates the likely presence of other factors which play a significant role in these intricate relationships.
